Responsible Business at Koekela
At Koekela, quality is key. Not only in our products, but also in
how we interact with the world around us. Every day we strive to be conscious
to make choices for people, the environment and society.

Sustainable packaging
Our packaging is as environmentally friendly as possible. Our pastry boxes are made from a combination of recycled cardboard and FSC-certified cardboard. The box is designed to ensure safe transport of our products. Used boxes, cleaned of any remaining crumbs, can be recycled with the paper recycling system. Customers can carry their purchases in a 100% recycled paper bag or opt for a reusable shopping bag or folding bag.
Consciously dealing with raw materials
Our process is designed to minimize the waste of raw materials and finished products. If there are any so-called "mis(lucky)lukkies" items that don't meet our sales standards but still taste delicious, they don't simply end up in the trash. We freeze them and give them a second life later – as a treat for our employees or as a donation to charity.
Of course, we separate paper, Plastic drink packaging (PD) and glass, so that these materials can be recycled.
Sustainable energy & mobility
At Koekela, we believe it's important to use energy responsibly. That's why we purchase power from Eneco, sourced from a European wind farm ( Eneco Europese wind® ). We've also replaced all our lighting with energy-efficient LED bulbs. Motion sensors have been installed in areas where possible to prevent unnecessary energy consumption.
Our deliveries are also sustainable: orders are delivered by electric buses, so we keep our emissions in the city low and contribute to cleaner air.

Ingredients of good origin
For our cakes and bars, we consciously choose ingredients from sustainable sources. For example, we use certified chocolate from the Cacao Horizons program , which contributes to better living and working conditions for cocoa farmers. Wherever possible and feasible, we use organic or locally grown fruit. For example, our lemons and limes are organically grown, and our pumpkins are grown in Rotterdam Rijnmond.

Investing in people – one team, one cake!
We are an Accredited Training Company . We believe it's important to give young bakers the opportunity to gain practical experience and develop within a safe, engaged, and educational environment based on our values. We also believe it's important that our team members have the space to continue developing. Individual qualities and interests are given the opportunity to develop further so that they can ultimately be put to use in the workplace. For the internal training of our bakers, we have written the Koekela instruction manual. We are proud of our diverse team! The diversity of backgrounds, the wealth of knowledge, the different experiences, the diverse qualities, and our work satisfaction form our Koekela team—one team, one cake!

Involved in the community
Koekela also contributes to society. We sponsor local initiatives and charities focused on team sports and health. To this end, we provide structural support to the following organizations:
- Daniel den Hoed Family Home Foundation
- Excelsior – Men, Women and Youth
